Frequently Asked Questions

Foamex is rigid PVC foam: smooth surface, indoor-focused, premium print finish, popular for exhibition stands and retail display. Correx is corrugated polypropylene: lighter, cheaper, weatherproof, ideal for short-term outdoor signage like estate agent boards and election placards.

Rigid board printing in Belfast: foam, correx, aluminium and PVC compared

Rigid board signage covers everything from a property window card to a 3-metre exhibition stand graphic. The four materials we print on most often, foam board (Foamex), correx, aluminium composite and display board, each suit different jobs and budgets. The decision helper above shows the right pick for each common use case. The detail below covers what each material is, why we print on it, and the practical considerations that decide whether you specify it correctly.

Foam board (Foamex): the indoor workhorse

Foam board is extruded PVC foam: a closed-cell rigid plastic with two smooth printable faces. It is light enough to carry single-handed even at A0, stiff enough to stand freely with edge support, and takes high-resolution UV print without primer or lamination. The name "Foamex" originally came from the Foamex Group brand and has become the generic term across the UK and Ireland print industry, much like "Hoover" became the generic for vacuum cleaners. We use the terms interchangeably. Configure foam board printing.

Correx: cheap, cheerful, weatherproof

Correx is fluted polypropylene, often described as the corrugated cardboard of plastics. It is light, weatherproof and inexpensive, which makes it the default for short-term outdoor signage. We print on 4mm and 10mm correx, both can be drilled, stake-mountable or zip-tied to fencing. Configure correx printing.

Aluminium composite: premium long-life external

Aluminium composite is two thin aluminium skins bonded to a polyethylene core, typically 3mm. It is the premium choice for long-life external signage: shop fascia panels, pub boards, wall-mounted graphics, and any project where the sign needs to look professional for years rather than weeks. The flat, rigid panels accept high-resolution UV print and resist warping in NI's wet weather. Configure aluminium composite signs.

Display board: the smoothest indoor surface

Display board is paper-faced foam core. It is indoor only and short-term by design, but the surface is the smoothest of any rigid material we print, which makes it the best choice for presentation panels, gallery exhibits, conference graphics and photographic enlargements where viewing distance is close and surface quality is paramount. Configure display board printing.

Setting up artwork for rigid board printing

Supply your artwork as a print-ready PDF at 150dpi minimum at the finished panel size. CMYK colour mode, with 3mm bleed on every edge that will be trimmed. Vector artwork is preferred for sharp text and logos at large sizes. Outline your fonts before exporting. We accept Illustrator (AI), EPS, and high-resolution PNG or JPEG as alternatives. Every file gets a free pre-press check before production starts, so we catch resolution problems, colour issues and bleed mistakes before they become reprints. For more on file setup, see our artwork guidelines and the bleed and safe zone guide.

Why local printing matters for rigid signage

Rigid panels are bulky. Shipping a single 3mm aluminium composite panel from a mainland printer can cost more than the panel itself, and a transit-damaged Foamex board needs to ship twice. Producing rigid signage in Belfast eliminates that overhead. You get a lower total cost, the option to collect the same day if you need to, a face-to-face conversation if your spec is unusual, and a faster reprint if anything's wrong. We back every rigid board order with the Papercut Promise: not happy with the result, free reprint, no questions.
