Creased Leaflets and Perforated Flyers: Specialist Finishing Options
Beyond the standard flat flyer
A flat, single-sheet flyer is effective for many purposes. But sometimes you need something more: a leaflet that folds neatly without cracking, a flyer with a tear-off coupon, or a mailer with a detachable reply slip. That is where creasing and perforating come in.
Creased leaflets
Creased leaflets have a pre-scored fold line pressed into the paper before folding. This is essential on heavier paper stocks (anything above about 170gsm) because thick paper cracks and splits along the fold if you simply fold it without scoring first.
Why it matters: If you have ever folded a thick card and seen the white inner fibres show through along the fold line, that is what happens without creasing. It looks unprofessional and damages any printed image or colour that crosses the fold. A clean crease gives you a sharp, professional fold every time.
Common formats:
- Single fold (bi-fold): One crease down the centre creates four panels. The most common format for menus, property details, and information leaflets.
- Letter fold (tri-fold): Two parallel creases create six panels. Fits into a DL envelope, making it ideal for direct mail.
- Z-fold (concertina): Two creases with alternating fold directions create six panels that open out flat. Popular for maps, step-by-step guides, and timeline layouts.
- Gate fold: Two outer panels fold inward to meet in the centre, opening like double doors. Creates a reveal effect that works well for product launches and invitations.
Perforated flyers
Perforated flyers have a line of tiny cuts through the paper that allows a section to be torn off cleanly. The main flyer stays intact while the tear-off portion serves a separate purpose.
Common uses:
- Tear-off coupons: A discount code or offer on a detachable strip that customers bring into the shop or enter online
- Reply slips: A detachable section with fields for name, address, and contact details, used for event RSVPs, survey responses, or membership sign-ups
- Tickets: The main flyer promotes the event; the tear-off serves as the admission ticket
- Appointment reminders: A detachable card-sized section with the appointment date and time
Perforated folded leaflets combine both features: a folded leaflet with a tear-off section. This gives you the information capacity of a multi-panel leaflet with the interactive element of a perforated coupon or reply slip.
When to use specialist finishes
Standard flat flyers work perfectly well for most promotional purposes. Add creasing when you need a fold on heavy stock. Add perforation when you want the recipient to do something physical: tear off a coupon, return a reply slip, or keep part of the flyer as a reference card.
The extra cost for creasing and perforating is modest, and the functional benefit can significantly increase response rates. A tear-off coupon that sits in someone's wallet is far more likely to drive a sale than a discount code buried in the text of a flat flyer.
